New Scientific Article Published on the Effects of COVID-19 Lockdowns on Youth Athletes

A new scientific article co-authored by SMS Lab members Ivana M. Milovanović  and Saša Pišot has been published in the Exercise and Quality of Life Journal. The paper, titled “Multidimensional Effects of COVID-19 Lockdowns on Youth Athletes: Evidence from Slovenian Coaches”, examines the long-term impact of COVID-19 restrictions on youth sports participation, physical fitness, skill development, and psychosocial well-being. The study was based on a survey of 116 coaches working with youth athletes in Slovenia. Findings revealed that prolonged lockdowns negatively affected athletes’ physical fitness, sport-specific skills, motivation, and self-confidence, while team spirit showed greater resilience. The research highlights the importance of maintaining structured physical activity and support systems during periods of disruption to protect the development and well-being of young athletes.
This publication contributes to the growing body of international research on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in sport and provides valuable insights for coaches, sports organizations, and policymakers working to strengthen the resilience of youth sport systems.
